Arts and Culture

Kalamunda shire offers a range of cultural, arts and community arts events through the year including the open studios and gardens in October, arts and crafts exhibitions and the Kalamunda and Districts Agricultural Society Show.

More than 20 artists and artisans have studios in the Shire and most of these can be visited by appointment.  The Kalamunda Districts arts and crafts group “Wagon” situated in the library garden on Railway Road sells a variety of goods made by local crafts people.

Creative expression groups abound catering for those with an interest in music, drama, visual arts, dance, photography, writing, arts and crafts.  The Shire has two exceptional cultural facilities – the Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre and the Town Square Community Theatre with live performances in both venues on a regular basis.

A series of community art projects in the past have involved many people in the community, the most notable project being the magnificent stained glass window to be found at the south end of the Kalamunda library – directly opposite the historic Kalamunda Hotel on Railway Road.

A recent and continuing community arts project is the painting of bus shelters in the Shire by various groups and individuals.  Two annual art competitions are held, one for the Local Government Week – Banners in the Terrace, and the second for school children during Children’s Book Week.

Kalamunda’s History is reflected in the History Village on Railway Road with a steam train permanently stopped at the original Kalamunda Station.  The village also has a number of historic buildings, schoolhouse, post office and cottages; tours are conducted for school groups, visitors and tourists.
