COMMUNITY BROADCASTING IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Community broadcasting has catered to the needs and interests of West Australians for more than 25 years. It serves communities and special interest groups as far flung as Albany in the south, Broome and Kununurra in the north, and areas such as York, Fremantle, Joondalup and Kalamunda in between.

The Western Australian Community Broadcasting Association (WACBA) is the peak body for community broadcasting in WA. Its role is to develop and promote the sector throughout Western Australia's regional, remote and metropolitan areas.

When WACBA was formed in 1986, only two community radio stations existed in West Australia, both of them in Perth.

Today, WA has 21 licensed community radio stations, one community television station, and over 12 active aspirant community broadcasting groups (a number of which are operating on Temporary Community Broadcasting Licences). More than half of the licensed stations and most of the aspirant groups are located in regional WA.

It is unlikely that this expansion would have been possible without WACBA.
